Pre-appointment Information

Elective surgery, procedures, treatments and appointments

Peel Health Campus (PHC) continues to review how to manage its readiness and response to the rapidly changing COVID-19 situation.

Please read the following information to prepare for your elective surgery, procedure, treatment or outpatient appointment.

  • Do you have a cough, runny nose, shortness of breath or a sore throat?
  • Have you developed a fever in the past five days?
  • Are you experiencing muscle and joint pain, headache or fatigue?
  • Have you a recent loss of taste or smell?
  • Do you have abdominal pain, vomiting or diarrhoea?
  • Have you been in contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19 within the last 7 days?
  • Have you received a positive COVID-19 test result in the last 7 days or are you awaiting results of a COVID-19 test?

If you answer YES to any of the above questions, you MUST discuss this with your admitting doctor.

If you have had COVID-19 in the 7 days prior to your planned admission date, please contact your consultant to make sure that he/she is aware of this.

Elective surgery refers to non-emergency surgery that is medically necessary, but which can be delayed for at least 24 hours. If you have been scheduled for surgery, and placed on the elective surgery waiting list, the following information will assist you to understand the process.

Patients and visitors who are well and have no symptoms of COVID-19 are no longer required to undertake a RAT prior to entering the hospital/admission.

However, if you answered yes to one of the screening questions you should contact your admitting doctor to discuss.

Please bring with you any letters or e-mails you have received with details of your procedure / treatment or appointment.

Do not attend the hospital if you are unwell. This includes, but is not limited to, having COVID-19/Influenza Type Illness symptoms.

Our dedicated team of professional staff are committed to providing you with the highest standards of care from pre admission to discharge.

Submitting your admission form

To ensure we can confirm your admission, financial and other arrangements, we ask that you:

  1. Fill in the online admission form, or

  2. Complete an Admission Information Booklet, available from your doctor or from the hospital, and send it to us as soon as possible.
    You will need the following information to complete these forms:

    1. Personal/Next of Kin details
    2. Medicare Card
    3. Funding details (eg DVA, Private health insurance, workcover or self funding) if applicable
    4. Benefit details (eg pharmacy benefit card or pension card)
    5. Item numbers and any information about prosthetics and disposables if you have been advised of these by your doctor

Checking your health fund cover (private patients only)

Please contact your health fund to confirm your cover as soon as possible. Depending on your insurer and your level of cover, you may have out of pocket expenses (such as excess or copayment etc). All costs need to be paid prior to admission.

Medications

Ask your doctor about your medications and what to take before and during your hospital stay.

Confirming your admission time

Your surgeon will advise admission time for day of surgery. If there are changes to the admission time, you will be contacted by the PHC Operating Theatre the day prior.

Pre admission Clinic

Your doctor may ask you to attend our Pre admission clinic. To make an appointment, please call 08 9531 8557.

The purpose of the pre admission clinic visit is to:

  • Obtain a thorough medical and surgical history and review medications
  • Conduct blood tests, X-rays, ECG and other investigations
  • Have relevant allied health professionals, such as dietician, physiotherapist or social worker, assess your needs
  • Provide information about the surgical procedure and recovery process
  • Arrange for your discharge home or to rehabilitation
  • Understand your needs and answer your questions

If you are scheduled to attend, please bring with you:

  • A list of your current medications
  • Current X-rays
  • Doctors’ letters
  • Past medical history from your general practitioner
